Sinkhole swallows Spokane garbage truck in Perry District

The front tires and part of the garbage truck's cab were in the hole.

SPOKANE, Wash. — Spokane road crews discovered the cause of the sinkhole that trapped one garbage truck in the Perry District.

According to the City of Spokane, the truck was collecting trash when the asphalt underneath gave way. The truck had minimal damage and the driver was not injured during the incident.

The truck reportedly broke a water main line. The pipes in the area were installed back in 1935.

Spokane City said the pipe repair would take a few hours, and street repair would happen shortly after.

Spokane City roads crews responded to the area of S. Laura St. between E. Newark Ave. and East 8th Avenue around 7:30 a.m. As of 10:45 a.m., S. Laura was completely shut down.

The front tires and part of the garbage truck's cab were in the hole. A crane arrived on scene around 10 a.m. and about an hour later, they lifted the truck out of the hole.

Water department crews on scene said once the truck is out, they will likely have to shut off water in the area to do repairs underground.

The Grain Shed, a bakery near the sinkhole, posted on Facebook, "We are OPEN! Unfortunately, the entirety of Laura (where the majority of our parking is located) is not."
