Civil Rights Leader Reverend Happy Watkins Remembered Today

SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. — Family, friends, and community members are set to gather in Spokane today to honor the life of Reverend Happy Watkins, a prominent local pastor and civil rights leader.

Watkins, the longtime pastor at New Hope Baptist Church, passed away last month at the age of 82. He was widely known for his dedication to civil rights, including co-founding Spokane's annual march honoring Reverend Martin Luther King Jr. For decades, Watkins delivered Dr. King’s iconic “I Have a Dream” speech at the event, inspiring generations.

A celebration of life will take place at 1 p.m. at Life Center Church on North Government Way in Spokane.
