SEATTLE — The state’s child welfare agency has revoked the license of a central Washington daycare after family members alleged a child’s foot was run over by a lawn mower at the facility.
The Quincy, Wash. daycare’s license was revoked Sept. 20 after the Washington State Department of Children, Youth and Families (DCYF) completed its investigation.
A department spokesperson said Dec. 3 that they couldn’t share specifics about the case.
Family members claim 2-year-old Mateo Pacheco Elliott was hospitalized in Seattle after his foot was cut off at the daycare on June 24.
Angela Axelson, a family friend, told KING 5 in August that the daycare owner was driving the riding lawn mower at the time of the incident. The child ran up to the lawn mower to speak to the owner and slipped and fell, according to Axelson. The boy then went under the lawn mower.
The child’s foot had to be amputated, and his ankle, knee and thigh were also seriously injured, according to updates posted by family members on an online fundraiser.
Elliott got his prosthetic Nov. 13, although he can’t use it until the wound heals, according to the fundraiser’s updates. He is also undergoing physical therapy.
DCYF suspended the daycare’s license while it investigated, which the agency said was common practice.
The Quincy Police Department said in August that it investigated the incident and didn’t find enough evidence to send it to prosecutors for criminal charges.
