MIKE is the newest addition to the Pullman police force and will be used to mitigate threats to police and public safety.
PULLMAN, Wash. — The Pullman Police Department (PPD) introduced a new, robotic member to its force on Wednesday: the Unitree Go2 Robot Dog, “MIKE” (Mission-Integrated Kinetic Entity).
PPD says the Capital Improvement Project (CIP) purchase will help to modernize the agency’s special operations capabilities by reducing human exposure to threat environments.
PPD says the remote-controlled robot dog is essentially a ground-based drone and is equipped with special features that make it valuable in various policing scenarios.
For example, one-way communication capabilities allow crisis negotiators to provide clear commands to barricaded subjects and the ability to carry up to 25 pounds provides the opportunity to transport phones, medical supplies, or other items to subjects in unsafe locations.
Additionally, 4K video and LIDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) mapping technology allow operators to view and plan for environmental conditions and threats before entering an active scene.
The Pullman Police Department says it intends to use MIKE as a de-escalation tool in cases involving barricaded subjects, to assist in building searches and to improve the safety of officers responding to dangerous incidents.
The department is excited to bring MIKE on board and to explore additional opportunities for its use in improving public safety.
