SPOKANE, Wash. — A pop-up event will be taking place this Thursday in the Perry District in response to various hate crimes committed against the Odyssey Youth Movement facility and rainbow crosswalk.
Vandals have targeted the facility and crosswalk several times in the last month. On Wednesday, volunteers spent the day cleaning the vandalized Pride mural. Spokane Arts received the right street permits and finalized a traffic control plan before the cleaning took place.
"We're blanketing the neighborhood with rainbow, glitter and unicorns," said Odyssey Executive Director Ian Sullivan. "You can't tear down every rainbow flag, if there's one on every porch."
In preparation for that event, the center and Spokane Arts power washed the crosswalk to get it as clean as possible for Thursday's celebration.
Spokane police is investigating the incidents, but Corporal Nick Briggs said the major crimes unit is not investigating the vandalism as hate crimes, at this time.
Briggs did say there have been an increased number of patrols around the neighborhood and the center since the 3-day streak of vandalism.
The pop-up event is scheduled for 4 p.m. Thursday.
