SPOKANE, Wash. — Spokane Public Schools (SPS) is working to open 14 new pickleball courts across the city.
SPS plans to turn existing tennis courts at local schools into pickleball courts. Tennis courts at Rogers, Shadle Park and North Central high schools will be turned into a total of six pickleball courts on the north side of the city, and courts at Ferris High School and Lewis and Clark's Hart Field will be turned into a total of eight pickleball courts on the South Hill.
One tennis court can be divided into two pickleball courts. With six up north and eight on the South Hill, Spokane will soon have 14 new outdoor pickleball courts.
Pickleball was named Washington state's official sport in 2022 and has since stolen the hearts, and free time, of residents across Spokane. The sport can be played both indoors and outdoors, but outdoor courts in Spokane are limited.
That scarcity combined with the community's love for the game prompted SPS to make accommodations.
“At Comstock Park, there will be 40 to 50 people playing pickleball,” said Dr. Gary Livingston, the former SPS superintendent who has been playing pickleball since 2012. “So those courts at the high schools will definitely be used. I think any time the school can give back to the community that supports it and continues to support it, is a powerful message."
