PALOUSE-- This 2012 harvest marked the beginning of a new program to feed those in need.
Farmington Farmer Bruce Nelson is taking some of his harvest and turning the golden stalks into green cash for the 2nd Harvest Food Bank. He's spearheading a new program called Washington Grain Growers Against Hunger.
The program takes out the middle man and makes it easy for farmers to feed families.
Grain growers take their harvest to their local elevator and donate any amount of wheat, from a few bushels to thousands. The bushels are sold and the money is given directly to 2nd Harvest.
2nd Harvest reported that local food banks are seeing a 10% increase in traffic since 2011.
Washington Grain Growers Against Hunger brings the American farmer in contact with those who need food the most.
