SPOKANE, Wash. — Spokane Firefighters hosted a special event on Monday where they handed out coats to children in need.
Hundreds of local children received coats as part of Operation Warm.
Spokane Firefighters Local 29 says they have been a part of Operation Warm for the last 10 years. Firefighter Bridget Blackmore says they all pool their money and put it into a pot they use to buy coats they are then able to donate to those less fortunate.
Blackmore told KREM 2, “It’s one of the most fulfilling things we do here as a union, as Spokane firefighters. Being able to provide these coats and knowing that these kids will be warm throughout the winter when otherwise they might not have these coats. It is very fulfilling for us to be able to provide these for the kids.”
Over the last 10 years the Spokane Firefighters have donated thousands of warm coats to children in need.
Monday’s coat giveaway will take place at Logan Elementary starting at 10 a.m.
The coat giveaway is part of the national Operation Warm program. According to their website, “Operation Warm’s mission has always been focused on the whole child. Their tagline is ‘More Than A Coat’ which they say means that the coats they provide don’t just provide physical warmth, but also emotional warmth.”
