Online university steps up to help ITT Tech students

SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. --- After the ITT Technical Institute closed its doors, one university is stepping up to help displaced students.

The ITT Technical building in Spokane Valley closed earlier this month, leaving many students without a way to finish their program.

Many students were caught off guard by the breach.

Western Governors University did not hesitate to act when they heard that ITT Technical Institute closed all of their locations across country.

“WGU immediately mobilized and we agreed to first and foremost help students to make wise choices,” said Western Governors University, Washington Chancellor, Jean Floten. “And that doesn't necessarily mean at WGU unless we are a good program fit."

Floten said that they will be offering academic counseling to former ITT Technical Institute students, waiving some of the fees they normally charge.

“The first thing that I felt was tremendous compassion to the students that were caught in the breach,” Floten added.

Western Governors University is also working on setting up scholarships for the displaced students.

“We believe that getting a degree is important and we don't want them to give up,” said Floten.

Floten said they cannot guarantee their programs will be a good fit for every student, but she encourages students to still contact them.

An assigned counselor at Western Governors University is ready to help any ITT Technical Institute students.
