Missing Grangeville woman's remains found along Snake River

The remains of Shawnta Pankey, who has been missing for more than a year, were found Sunday near Buffalo Eddy on the Snake River.

GRANGEVILLE, Idaho — The Nez Perce County Coroner has identified the body of a Grangeville woman who has been missing since April 2018.

The Idaho County Sheriff’s Office said Shawnta Pankey’s remains were found Sunday near Buffalo Eddy on the Snake River.

The Lewiston Tribune reported a volunteer with Nez Perce County's Search and Rescue group found a skull and other bones along the river.

Officials have not released how Pankey died. Sheriff Doug Giddings told KREM's Boise sister station KTVB last year that he had been unable to rule out foul play in the woman's disappearance.

Pankey's boyfriend told investigators she had been at Pine Bar the day she disappeared, and was last seen walking along the Salmon River. Her family told authorities that it was out of character for her to not be in contact with them.

The Idaho County Sheriff's Office said the investigation into her case will continue.
