Rider killed in motorcycle crash in Kootenai County backcountry

The rider went off the road and down an embankment on a Forest Service Road in Kootenai County.

KOOTENAI COUNTY, Idaho — A Moses Lake man died while riding a motorcycle in the north Idaho backcountry.

The Kootenai County Sheriff's Office (KCSO) responded to a call about a single motorcycle crash at 2:50 p.m. on Sunday, May 26.

Callers reported that the motorcycle and rider went off the road and down an embankment on Forest Service Road (FSR) 437 near FSR 1530. The driver was reportedly unconscious.

On scene, emergency responders learned the rider was driving on a curve when he lost control of his motorcycle and hit a tree. The rider and motorcycle were thrown down an embankment. The rider died from his injuries.

KCSO identified the rider as 28-year-old Austin Vickery of Moses Lake.

The crash is still under investigation, but investigators say speed is believed to be a factor.

The KCSO Back Country Unit and Traffic Unit, along with Kootenai County Fire and Rescue and Northern Lakes Fire, all responded to the scene.
