MT HOOD, Ore. — A man reported missing while hunting for mushrooms have been found after a nearly three-day search, according to the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office. This would be the fourth related case of missing fungi foragers.
The 40-year-old Nathan Kelly from Sandy was reported missing Sunday evening in the Mount Hood National Forest, east of Southeast Wildcat Mountain Drive and southeast of Sandy. He and a friend had been separated in the dense forest terrain.
Multiple search and rescue teams on the ground began searching for Kelly, with more arriving Monday. Drones were also brought in to search hard-to-reach areas. During the search in dense forest and steep terrain, there were periods of high winds, heavy rain and hail, along with dropping temperatures at night, the sheriff's office said.
Kelly was found Tuesday morning while walking out of the Eagle Creek Trail and onto Southeast Harvey Road, where Portland Mountain Rescue searchers were arriving to deploy. The Clackamas County Sheriff's Office reported that Kelly "cold and wet, but otherwise in good condition."
The Clackamas County Sheriff's Office, Portland Mountain Rescue, Mountain Wave Emergency Communications, Pacific Northwest Search and Rescue, the Hood River Crag Rats and the AMR Reach and Treat team all helped search.
