SPOKANE, Wash. — The Idaho Department of Insurance and Senior Health Insurance Benefits Advisors (SHIBA) is encouraging those eligible for Medicare to prepare for the open enrollment season, beginning October 15.

Those with Medicare or seeking to enroll should review their plan options and costs between October 15 and December 7. Those already enrolled can make changes to existing prescription drug or Medicare Advantage plans or enroll in new plans if they choose.

“Medicare can be confusing, and plans and one’s circumstances can change. It’s important that Idaho seniors who have Medicare take the time to review their plans during open enrollment and choose the plan that best fit their medical needs,” said SHIBA Director Dean Cameron. “I strongly encourage consumers to seek guidance from our SHIBA representatives and a licensed agent.”

SHIBA representatives in Idaho and Washington are available to talk with Medicare members and those eligible to join the federal health care program. SHIBA representatives can provide free Medicare information and help members review Medicare coverage options.

Idaho SHIBA counselors can be reached at (800) 247-4422 or through their monthly Medicare webinar workshops. To register for an upcoming Medicare webinar, please contact the SHIBA Helpline at 1-800-247-4422.

In Washington, SHIBA counselors can be reached at (800) 562-6900. Additionally, there are in-person SHIBA offices across Washington state. Find your local SHIBA office here

SHIBA also warns that the open enrollment period can be a time when improper marketing can make things confusing for seniors and healthcare providers. Visit the SHIBA website for more on how to protect your information during open enrollment.
