MEAD, Wash. — Construction is already underway, connecting roads in north Spokane to the soon-to-be Mead Works.
According to Greenstone, the developer of the site, Mead Works will be a walkable, mixed-use neighborhood with local businesses and restaurants and approximately 1,400 new living spaces.
"Something that creates a wide range of housing types, for people and a wide range of economic and social diversity within the community,” Greenstone founder Jim Frank said.
Frank said Mead Works will support housing the area’s growing population.
“It's really important that we build as much housing as we can, especially with the kind of housing crisis that we have going on right now,” Frank said.
The 300-acre parcel previously buffered the Kaiser smelting plant. After the plant shut down, Greenstone jumped at the opportunity for land use.
Frank said Greenstone has been working with Kaiser for at least the last seven years on the development.
“This is just a really great location to add housing to the Spokane region,” Frank said.
Mead Works has already gotten some online traction, some dubbing it as 'Kendall Yards 2.0.'
Frank said while there will likely be some similarities, there will also be differences.
“It's accurate in the sense that we want it to be a walkable, mixed use community," Frank explained. "Not going to necessarily see as many five and six story buildings. You’ll likely see two and three story building and that will likely help cut down the density. But the main concept of the development will be very similar to Kendall Yards.”
Kendall Yards is also a Greenstone property.
At this time, only main arterial roads have been constructed.
"Then we're installing the sewer and water infrastructure that we need the rest of the winter into the spring of 2024.
Frank said the goal is to begin construction of homes in 2024 with the potential for people to move in in 2025.
