SPOKANE, Wash. — Spokane Public Library (SPL) is hosting a Lunar New Year Celebration at the Shadle Park Library on Saturday, February 10.

The event will begin with a story time and activities for kids at 10 a.m., followed by a variety of dances presented by the Spokane Chinese Association.

The celebration continues at 11:30 a.m. with a Shaobing cooking demonstration. At 1 p.m. there will be accessory making inspired by K-Pop which is then followed by K-Pop Dance lessons at 3 p.m.

“This Lunar New Year will be especially meaningful because it will ring in the Year of the Dragon, arguably one of the most important within the 12-year Lunar New Year cycle because it is believed to be a time of great transformation,” said Spokane Public Library Community Educator Juan Juan Moses. “We look forward to celebrating this special year with the community at this day-long celebration!”

Throughout the day, gifts will be raffled off throughout the day. Gifts include free tutoring at Kumon Math and Reading Center, gift certificates to local Asian grocery stores and restaurants and a variety of Asian spices.

Lunar New Year, also known as Spring Festival, will be celebrated on February 10. The celebration will last for 15 days. It is recognized as the most important holiday in China.

This festival is also celebrated in Vietnam as Tết, in North and South Korea as 설날 (Seollal), and in Tibet as Losar.
