SPOKANE, Wash. — Spokane swore in its new mayor, Lisa Brown, on Wednesday evening at the downtown library. The swearing in came five days before she officially take on Spokane’s mayorship.
Brown was elected this past November in what was a highly contested race. Brown defeated current Mayor Nadine Woodward by 2,853 votes.
As Brown prepares for office, she has already announced five transitional committees to help navigate her top priorities. These committees include public safety, criminal justice, health and housing options, the regional economy and the city’s budget and sustainability.
Brown said of her transitional committees, “I want this to be everything from ‘we need to do this now,’ very action oriented, to ‘here is where we are headed.’”
Another task to be addressed as Brown enters office will be finding a replacement for Spokane Police Chief Craig Meidl who announced his resignation a month ago. Brown says she will conduct a national search to find his replacement.
The swearing-in ceremony is scheduled for 5:30-7 p.m. at the downtown library. The event will also be streamed on the Spokane Public Library’s YouTube channel.
