One person dead after Sunday night shooting in Airway Heights

Officers arrested 30-year-old Devine D. Bullard, who was booked into the Spokane County jail. He was charged with five counts of first degree assault.

AIRWAY HEIGHTS, Wash. — Police in Airway Heights confirm one person was killed in a shooting in the 1700 block of South Campbell Street on Sunday night.

Officers say they received a call just before 8:45 p.m. When they arrived, they found a 28-year-old man who had been shot. Police provided life-saving measures, but the man did not survive his injuries.

Police say that initial information indicates an argument quickly escalated into a physical altercation. They also believe that pepper spray or bear mace was used during the altercation. 

Officers arrested 30-year-old Devine D. Bullard, who was booked into the Spokane County jail. He was charged with five counts of first-degree assault.

Bullard stated to police that after he was sprayed with pepper spray he feared for his life so he "fired his weapon in self defense." Police believe Bullard exited his home to fire his gun again before returning back inside his home. 

Spokane County Sheriff’s Major Crimes detectives and personnel from the Spokane County Forensic Unit were investigating at the scene.

Investigators do not believe the shooting was random.
