MOSCOW, Idaho — A fight allegedly involving University of Idaho football players on February 10 has led to the cancellation of this year's Summer Fest.
According to emails from event organizers, a student was reportedly sucker-punched and knocked unconscious by a Vandal football player, who was accompanied by other teammates wearing ski masks and carrying PVC pipes. The fight took place on private property where the players were not invited.
Organizers said the fight was a "purported retaliation" for something that happened a week prior. The person who was attacked reportedly had nothing to do with that incident. According to organizers, the person who was knocked out happened to be the child of Summer Fest's biggest sponsor during all three years.
"He suffered a traumatizing experience and this kind of behavior cannot be tolerated," organizers said. They added, "After this incident, none of us could see ourselves going out and asking for sponsorships or selling tickets in light of this situation--not when one of our own was brutally attacked."
At this time, nearly 20 University of Idaho athletes are under investigation for this fight.
According to the emails from organizers, over the last three years the event has raised $60,000 to the Vandal Scholarship Fund.
A previous year's event included live & silent auction and a dinner.
