Board of County Commissioners will discuss idea of closing Latah County Jail

LATAH COUNTY, Idaho — The Board of County Commissioners will discuss the topic of potentially closing the Latah County Jail later this month.

According to a press release from the Latah County Sheriff's Office (LCSO), the sheriff's office said there have been many rumors about whether the jail will close or not. 

LCSO said no decision has been made yet because it has not been discussed publicly.

The sheriff's office said the jail, built in 1973, is "nowhere close to current jail standards." The sheriff's office said they were notified by the Moscow Police Department late this summer of "several issues regarding fire egress and fire suppression systems" in the jail.

"While some of these systems can be remedied at great taxpayer expense, there are several that cannot be repaired and therefore could create a severe liability for Latah County as a whole," the sheriff's office said in the press release."

The sheriff's office said the Board of County Commissioners will discuss the topic at its next meeting on Tuesday, October 8.
