Post Falls officer released from hospital after being shot in line of duty

The Post Falls Police Department said Sergeant Justin Anderson will continue his recovery at home with his friends and family.

POST FALLS, Idaho — Sgt. Justin Anderson was released from the hospital on Tuesday after being shot in the line of duty last week.

The Post Falls Police Department said Sgt. Anderson will continue his recovery at home with his friends and family.

"He was just able to start actually eating things the last couple of days so he was really looking forward to having his milkshake when he got home today," said Post Falls Police Lt. Mark Brantl.

Sgt. Anderson was shot while searching for a wanted suspect, Thomas W. Boland, near 100 S. Bently Place last Tuesday.

Boland was found dead in the home following an hourslong standoff.

Police said Anderson encountered a man and exchanged gunfire. Anderson was hit just below his bulletproof vest.

"It's very shocking to the community and it sends a shockwave through the department," Brantl added.

Post Falls Police Chief Pat Knight said Anderson was driven directly to Kootenai County Fire Station 1, where county fire and rescue staff tended to his injuries.

He was then taken to Kootenai Medical Center, where he underwent emergency surgery.

Anderson is a 12-year law enforcement veteran who joined the Post Falls Police Department as a patrol sergeant in 2013, Knight said. He added that Anderson was in good spirits after the shooting.

It may be a few months before Anderson is back on the job but his fellow officers are encouraged by his progress. They held a private event on Tuesday morning to escort him home.

"Sgt. Anderson will recover, he will return to work and we'll continue to serve Post Falls as best as we can," Brantl said.
