COEUR D'ALENE, Idaho — A former employee of a Coeur d'Alene credit union was shot and killed on Saturday after he barged into the branch with a gun.
Coeur d'Alene Police said Joshua Martz went into the Global Credit Union wearing a motorcycle helmet and carrying a gun.
Inside the branch was an armed security guard hired to work there due to threats Martz had made in the past. The guard fired at Martz, hitting him three times. Martz tried to flee, but collapsed and died before getting out of the building.
Workers at neighboring businesses heard it all play out. In a press release issued by Global Credit Union, it initially said that Martz fired his gun, but police confirmed Wednesday that it wasn't the case.
The credit union said Martz clashed with coworkers and they surmised that he would show up to carry out retribution.
Police said they are still investigating the case as an attempted robbery and that they don't have anything else indicating otherwise.
"Just a scary situation. Here you have somebody who's kind of unstable and obviously had some anger issues," said witness Silas Dobbs.
Martz's motive isn't entirely clear.
The credit union said they considered him a threat after he walked off the job earlier this summer.
Martz's doesn't have a criminal record in Idaho. Records show that he had divorced his wife within the last couple of years and the couple had children together.
He was also let go from Spokane Teachers Credit Union after he tried to access accounts belonging to relatives. The credit union said it was against policy for him to view those accounts.
The case is still under investigation by the Coeur d'Alene Police Department and the FBI. Security cameras inside the credit union captured part of the incident, but the video hasn't been released at this time.
