KOOTENAI COUNTY, Idaho --- The Kootenai Electric Cooperative is warning its members about a scam in the area.

Scammers are apparently calling customers and impersonate the utility. The scammers will claim customers owe them money for an overdue bill that needs to be paid immediately, according to a release from KEC.

The scammer is calling from the number (800) 994-9025 but may call from other numbers as well, according to KEC.

KEC officials said they are working with the local and federal authorities to stop the scammers.

Kootenai Electric Cooperative offered members the following tips to avoid falling for scams:

  • Call KEC at (208) 765-1200 to verify whether a person is a KEC employee and the purpose of the contact.
  • Members should never provide account numbers, social security numbers, credit card numbers or banking information to anyone requesting it over the phone unless you initiated the call.
  • If you receive a call claiming to be your utility company and feel pressured for payment hang up and call the number on your utility bill.
