COEUR D'ALENE, Idaho—Security cameras and a City Council vote could be the key to stopping street racers from speeding through a new North Idaho parking garage.
KREM 2 News originally reported about the recent issues in the McEuen Park garage in late April. Police had received several complaints of people driving recklessly fast through the garage.
By May, Coeur d'Alene leaders said they were working toward a solution. Leaders plan to vote Tuesday night on whether to amend a current ordinance. The change would lay down the law and simply state that parking lots owned by the City of Coeur d'Alene are for parking and nothing else.
The issues expand beyond street racing in the new parking lot. City leaders also received complains about people loitering in the McEuen Park garage and causing trouble.
City leaders said police and parking enforcement can currently only encourage people who are not here to park to just simply move along.
The voted schedule for Tuesday could add restrictions to all Coeur d'Alene owned parking lots.
Some of the amendments include imposing a five-mile-per-hour speed limit and outlawing any reckless behavior, including threatening language and making unreasonable noiseThe new rules would outlaw any gatherings in parking lots other than city authorized events.
City leaders also want to add video cameras in public spots including the garage at McEuen Park.
