SEATTLE — It's been almost four years since a Washington family suffered devastating loss in an Okanogan County wildfire, but they have made big strides in their recovery, and welcomed a new addition.
Jacob and Jamie Hyland lost their firstborn son, Uri, in the devastating Cold Springs wildfire of 2020. Jamie also lost her unborn baby and the ability to carry future biological children.
The couple's grief was unimaginable, but as their physical injuries healed, they were determined to grow their family. They turned to surrogacy, but endured at least five failed attempts before finally finding success in 2023.

"Every time it failed, it was just like, my cup was already really, really, empty," Jacob said. "[It] just felt like it had even more holes in it."
"We were thrust into a grieving process yet again," Jamie added.
Baby Shiloh was born with help from a surrogate.
"When she was born, she went on to my chest and latched and starting nursing," Jamie said. "And I called Jacob and I was like, 'She's here!' Just so happy."
Jacob told KREM 2 Shiloh's birth was like turning a corner in their recovery process.
"There's something about a child's laughter that just is healing," he said. "Before, I didn't really know why we were living. I had no clear direction. Having her around does bring a lot more joy."
The couple told KREM 2 they have one viable egg left and are hoping for one last try.
