Indian Canyon Golf Course begins renovations on old bunkers

New bunkers have been the most requested upgrade for Indian Canyon Golf Course — they have not been redone since the course's initial opening in the 1930s.

SPOKANE, Wash. — City of Spokane Parks and Recreation is excited to bring more value to their players with new bunkers at Indian Canyon Golf Course. Golf Manager Mark Poirier, told KREM 2 the bunkers have been a long-awaited renovation for golfers across the Greater Spokane Area. The course originally opened in Spokane in the mid 1930s. Since then the bunkers have not been redone.

The dense and heavy dirt will be replaced with softer sand, making it easier for play. The old bunkers made it difficult for golfers to hit golf balls out and get closer to the hole. Also, new sand will be a brighter tan, making the course even more picturesque.

Poirier said redoing the bunkers is extensive work. Between redesigning, scraping, drainage and the new sand, it takes a lot of time and thought. Currently, the course has 21 bunkers, but after renovations they plan to only have 20.

"It's all funded basically by our golfers, that play golf here. I think that's really cool to give back to them and give them the best product possible," said Poirier.

Renovations started on Monday, Sept. 23rd and the project is expected to be completed within four to five weeks. Golfers will receive a $5 dollar discount for 18-hole rounds Monday through Thursday, and up until noon on Fridays.

In addition to the bunkers, the greens are being aerated during the renovation process.

The overall goal for the City is to give golfers a better playing condition. Especially as there has been a spike in players within the past fives years, and 2024 has been no different. With the warmer weather this fall, the City is expecting a longer golfing season.
