Sandpoint Lady Liberty statue taken off display due to damage

Sandpoint mayor confirms repair time could take up to 4-8 weeks.

SANDPOINT, Idaho — The City of Sandpoint announced on their Facebook page, that the Lady Liberty statue at the end of the pier at City Beach was taken off display after it was damaged last weekend.

The post says that it sustained damage and, for the safety of the public, was removed for repairs.

Sandpoint Mayor Jeremy Grimm confirmed a city worker first noticed that the base of the statue was loose on Saturday, Aug. 17

Grimm adds he made the decision to take the statue down due to the risk it could sink into the water. The repairs require a new base for the statue as well as a fresh layer of paint.

The city says that the Lady Liberty statue will stand tall for pictures again in about 4 to 8 weeks. They also thanked people for their concern for the iconic landmark in Sandpoint.

The statue was donated to the City of Sandpoint in the early 2000s in memory of Louise (Lee) Turner.
