COEUR D'ALENE, Idaho — The Rose Lake Informal Recreation Area is closing due to high levels of lead found in the area.
According to the Idaho Panhandle National Forests (IPNF), they are closing the site located southwest of Rose Lake between Highway 3 right of way and the Coeur d'Alene River.
IPNF said the closure is "for the protection of public health and safety due to anomalously high levels of lead found across the area, in the soils, sand, and dust."
Violating the closure order could result in a misdemeanor, with fines of up to $5,000 or up to six months in jail for going past the barricade.
IPNF said rehabilitation strategies are being assessed.
If you have any other information on the closure, you can contact the Coeur d'Alene River Ranger District at (208) 664-2318.
