POST FALLS, Idaho — A small stand of Christmas trees arrived Monday morning at Post Falls American Legion Post 143, ready to spruce up living rooms and help make the holidays merry and bright for those who have served their country.
The free trees are being offered first come, first served to local veterans and American Legion members in need.
"It's just adding to our list of services for our veteran community," Post 143 Adjutant Tim Shaw said Monday. "We're constantly looking for different things we can do, if it's small, big or however impactful."
A donation of Christmas trees has become an annual tradition at the post, thanks to a partnership with the Post Falls Orgill. This is the third year Orgill has donated at least 25 trees.
"They're also a big sponsor of our golf tournament every June or July," Shaw said. "They have been incredible to work with."
The American Legion is the country's largest veteran service organization, serving military families, individuals and communities since its formation in 1919.
The Post Falls American Legion, incorporated in July 1984, was named for Cpl. Steven H. Nipp, U.S. Marines, who was killed in action Feb. 8, 1969, in Vietnam. Nipp, 20, was a 1966 graduate of Post Falls High School.
His namesake post currently has more than 700 members.
"As the largest post in Idaho, we feel the responsibility to dive into anything we can at every level we can to try to make a difference," Shaw said.
