SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) The Washington Fish and Wildlife Department is trying to find out what has killed hundreds of carp in Long Lake, a 24-mile reservoir on the Spokane River near Spokane.

Nearby residents say the dead fish floating in weeds and washing up on shore have created a horrible stink.

Wildlife Officer Bob Weaver who checked out the fish die-off over the weekend says it may be caused by low oxygen levels, or a bacteria in the water. However, officials say there is no threat to public health.

A spokesman for Avista, which owns Long Lake dam, says the utility doesn't believe it's a water quality issue. Hugh Imhof says no algae blooms have been spotted this year on the lake.
