How people are beating the heat in downtown Spokane

People are staying cool in Spokane, even while enjoying the summer carnival.

SPOKANE, Wash. — The Idaho Central Credit Union Summer Carnival is taking place in Riverfront Park in downtown Spokane until Sunday, July 7 and even with temperatures pushing triple digits, people were out enjoying the day on Friday.

Jennifer Columbus works game concessions at the carnival and has her own tricks to staying cool in the heat.

“I've come like four or five times already at different years, different games,” Columbus said. “I buy too many drinks because … it'll turn to soup if you don't drink it fast enough.”

She recommends staying hydrated and wearing sunscreen.

“Your sunblock, because it does make you feel better. For real, without it, you feel the burn,” Columbus said.

Columbus encourages people to make a trip to the carnival and enjoy the park’s splash pad when the heat gets intense.

“People do love it over here. They had a good time. This is where the magic happens,” said Columbus.

Spokane has several resources available for those looking for ways to escape the heat. Public splash pads like the one in Riverfront Park are operational everyday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. and public pools offer free swimming hours Monday through Saturday from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
