The city of Spokane approved another warming shelter contract to house men in need.
We originally reported the contract provides 40 spaces, but a West Central Spokane church decided to instead open up its gym, allowing for 60 spaces.
This now brings the city to a total of 170 additional spaces.
The Salem Lutheran Church is the newest warming shelter to contract with the city of Spokane. They hope to open as soon as staff are trained.
"There's going to be basic needs, water bottles, snacks, granola bars. and that sort of thing," Katie Rivkin with Salem Lutheran Church said. Really our goal is to provide the roof and then everything else that kind of happens check in wise is staffed through Salvation Army."
Once the shelter opens, people will check-in inside the lobby. The church will provide mats, access to restrooms and a few showers. These warming shelters will be open everyday from 9 p.m. to 7 a.m.
The city has already approved contracts for about 100 other additional warming shelter spaces throughout downtown Spokane.
Those spaces are located at Open Doors for families, Women's Hearth and Hope House for women, and Crosswalk for teens.
House of Charities is an existing shelter for women, but it's increased its capacity for the winter months.
The city is also working on another contract for spaces in the west part of downtown.
