GRANT COUNTY, Wash. — The Grant County Sheriff's Office is warning residents of a phone scammer impersonating a sergeant to get personal information.
According to the sheriff's office, the scammer is claiming that people who answer his calls should call him back regarding "a contact order that requires an immediate response.”
Officials said when residents call back, the scammer will try to get personal information. The sheriff's office reminded locals that they will never call and do the following:
- Ask you to transfer money to a new account to help catch a fraudster at your bank,
- Ask for your card PIN or your online banking details,
- Ask you to send money anywhere, for any reason,
- Send someone to your home to collect cash or personal information,
- Ask you to buy anything on your card, and then hand it over to them for safekeeping
- Threaten you with arrest for failing to comply with any of the things they've asked you to do
- Say they're going to arrest you because of an overdue payment or anything similar
- Rush you into taking action
Those with questions can contact the sheriff's office at (509) 754-2011.
