Three community pools to host free evening swimming on Saturday

With temperatures reaching triple digits, the City of Spokane is providing additional resources to help residents stay cool.

SPOKANE, Wash. — The City of Spokane will provide additional free swimming hours at three community pools on Saturday due to high temperatures.

The A.M. Cannon, Comstock and Shadle pools will host free evening swimming in addition to the regular afternoon swimming hours on Saturday, July 20.

The six public pools have free swimming Monday through Saturday from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. and evening swim from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. that rotates locations every day.

Additionally, splash pads at public parks are operational daily from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.

For any changes in schedules, visit the Spokane Parks website.

The City of Spokane will also have cooling centers open for those seeking relief from the heat.

Spokane Public Library locations and the Trent Resource and Assistance Center (TRAC) will be used as public cooling spaces.

The library locations include:

·                     Central (906 W. Main St.)

·                     Shadle Park (2111 W. Wellesley Ave.)

·                     Liberty Park (402 S. Pittsburg St.)

·                     Hillyard (4110 N. Cook St.)

·                     South Hill Library (3324 S. Perry St.)

·                     Indian Trail (4909 W. Barnes Road).

Libraries will be open during regular hours on weekdays, and select locations will extend hours over the weekend. Expanded hours will be at Shadle Park until 7 p.m. on Saturday, and Liberty Park, Indian Trail and Central until 7 p.m. on Sunday.

TRAC offers industrial fans, meals, supplemental hydration resources and snacks for those seeking shelter.

Spokane Transit Authority will also offer fare exceptions to riders going to and from cooling centers when the temperature is 95 degrees or above.

If a passenger boards a bus and indicates that they do not have fare payment, and are traveling to a cooling area, STA will allow them to ride for free. This practice remains in effect for same-day return trips during the evening even after the temperature drops below 95 degrees.

Additionally, The Salvation Army offers vans that can pick up passengers and help them connect to local shelters. Call 509-280-6860 or 509-280-6894 if you need a ride.
