How to throw away your Christmas tree for free in the City of Spokane

Taking down your antique ornaments and colored lights? Here's how Spokane is helping people dispose of their Christmas trees.

SPOKANE, Wash. — Following the Christmas holiday, the City of Spokane is offering free Christmas tree pickup

The city will haul away old Christmas trees if it's six feet and under in height starting Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2024, through Friday, Jan. 12. Once families take down their ornaments and colored lights, take the tree outside and place it three feet away from the reuse and recycling cart. Trees taller than six feet must be cut in half.

Holiday packaging like gift wrap (except for metallic foil paper and cellophane) is also recyclable. Wrapping paper can be added to cardboard gift boxes and wrapping paper rolls. Other materials like plastic bags, plastic wrap, and tissue paper should go in the brown cart.

Both city and county of Spokane residents can drop off unflocked trees here:

  • Waste-to-Energy Facility, 2900 S. Geiger Blvd | Open 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.
  • Spokane Valley Transfer Station, 3941 N. Sullivan Road | Open 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays and 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekends.
  • North County Transfer Station, 22123 Elk-Chattaroy Road | Open 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays and 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekends.

For more information, call the Recycling Hotline at 509-477-6800.

The City of Spokane garbage pickup and curbside recycling will be a day late the week of Jan. 1, 2024. The Waste to Energy facility and transfer stations will be closed on Sunday, Jan 1.
