OLYMPIA, Wash. — The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) reports that vehicle fires were the fourth leading type of fire incident in Washington State.

NFPA says that vehicle fires are 4.5 times more deadly than residential fires and in Washington state last year, 3,593 vehicle fires were reported.

These incidents resulted in 13 fatalities and more than $167 million in property loss.

Washington State Fire Marshal’s Office recommends the following safety tips for preventing and responding to vehicle fires:

  • Drive safely and follow road rules

  • Stay up to date with routine vehicle maintenance

If a vehicle fire occurs, safety protocols are as follows:

  • Quickly and safely pull the vehicle to the side of the road

  • Turn off the engine

  • Have all passengers exit the vehicle

  • Find a safe location to regroup at least 100 feet away from the vehicle

  • Call 911

  • Do not return to the vehicle
