MEAD, Wash. — One person was killed in a car crash northeast of Colbert, Washington, on Monday.

According to the Spokane County Sheriff's Office, deputies responded to reports of a crash and fire on North Madison Road near East Madison Branch Road Monday morning.

As officers were arriving to the scene, the sheriff's office said they saw firefighters with Fire District 4 and Fire District 9 putting out a brush fire, while also attending to a damaged truck off the road.

The sheriff's office said the truck was heavily damaged, and one person was found dead inside.

According to the sheriff's office, the driver was heading south on North Madison Road at a speed the sheriff's office said was "believed to be too fast for the roadway," when he lost control of the truck and crashed into a tree.

The sheriff's office said the crash sparked a fire, and firefighters were able to put out the fire.

Speed and inexperience are believed to be factors in the deadly car crash.

The sheriff's office also said the Spokane County Medical Examiner's Office will release the name, cause and manner of the driver and his death when appropriate.
