WHITMAN COUNTY, Wash. — Right now, fire crews from Whitman County, Asotin County and across the Lewis Clark Valley are fighting wildland fire.
Here is what you need to know:
- The fire size is 1,150 acres and growing.
- The fire is called the Nisqually John Fire
- All evacuations have been lowered Saturday morning.
- 50% contained.
- The fire is burning in grass and brush.
- Avoid Wawawai Road and Steptoe Canyon Road if possible.
- Fire officials report fire burning North to Northeast.
- Smoke from the fire has made its way into the Lewis Clark Valley.
- State fire assistance has been mobilized
- The fire is moving south
According to Asotin County fire officials, crews were dispatched Friday morning around 8 a.m. to a fire burning along the Snake River about 12 miles west of Clarkston.
Whitman County Fire District 14 called for help from around the region.
The Washington State Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is also providing air support with helicopters and scooper planes.
Fire officials report no homes were initially threatened this morning.
The cause of the fire is currently unknown.
