Coulee City postal delivery driver reflects on 40 years of service

Ronald Lee Hughes has logged over one million miles without a crash.

COULEE CITY, Wash. — Could you ever imagine doing the same job for four decades?

One local postal delivery driver has exactly done that.

Ronald Lee Hughes has been serving the same route in Coulee City, Washington for the past 40 years as a contract route delivery driver. According to USPS, Hughes started working for the Coulee City Post Office as a substitute contract driver.

USPS said his parents owned the route at the time, and he eventually took over the route and has been taking care of the route six days a week for the last 40 years.

In his four decades of service, Hughes has logged over one million miles without a single accident. Because of this accomplishment, Hughes won himself the National Safety Council Million Mile Award.

“There are just so many memories, mostly good, and I have to say this last group of folks I have had the pleasure of working with to the end of my career is probably my favorite crew yet,” Hughes said.

“I have built some very strong bonds with my people," Hughes also said. "I take pride and respect in my route, doing my job for as long as I have.”
