Construction to renovate Underhill Park's sports courts begins on Monday, August 19.
The site in the East Central neighborhood will receive two new basketball courts and two pickleball courts along with new sidewalks, lighting and fencing.
The project is anticipated to be complete by the end of 2024 for the courts and new landscaping will be completed in the spring of 2025.
The courts will be completely closed during the renovation. The Grant Park courts will be the closest courts available to residents during the construction.
“Many of our sport courts are aging, and through our Master Plan process, we heard from the community how important these facilities are for health and wellness, and for building neighborhood connectivity,” said Garrett Jones, interim city administrator.
The total budget for the court renovation is $628,000. The project is funded by City of Spokane Parks & Recreation and through a grant from the Washington State Recreation and Conservation Office. Dick’s Sporting Goods, No-Li Brewhouse and the Spokane Hoopfest Association are also supporting the renovation and Cameron Reilly, LLC is the contractor.
“Investing in our neighborhood parks – amenities like playgrounds, restrooms, and sport courts – is our big focus right now, and we’re see that through recent projects like Liberty Park, Wildhorse Park, and Corbin Park," said Jones. "These renovations are often the result of matching grants and community supporters, and we are grateful for their collaboration to deliver on these community priorities.”
This summer Corbin Park received a renovated sport court, including the City’s first dedicated pickleball courts. Parks & Recreation aims to renovate one sport court per year. For more information on Parks & Recreation planning projects, visit their website here.
