Construction continues at Washington nuclear waste cleanup site

The company's contract said it has to start treating the radioactive waste by 2022.

A company building the Hanford Nuclear cleanup site is making progress with construction.

Bechtel National Inc. announced Wednesday that workers at Hanford’s Waste Treatment and Immobilization Plant (WTP), or Vit Plant, have completed the structural concrete foundation and wall placements for an effluent management facility.

Once completed, the building will turn liquid nuclear waste into glass-like logs, according to reports. Workers will then bury the logs.

Construction on the treatment plant started in 2002.
