SPOKANE, Wash. — The Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission has developed its preliminary land use plan for the potential expansion of Riverside State Park.

According to a press release from Washington State Parks, the plan includes recommendations for the long-term boundary of Riverside State Park as well as a proposed expansion that would include a 1,000-acre area known as “Glen Tana.”

The land use plans for Glen Tana include 3 different classifications: natural, heritage, and resource recreation areas.

The first of these, natural areas, are designated for preservation and the restoration of natural processes and significant ecological, geological, or paleontological value, according to Washington State Parks. These areas also provide numerous opportunities for outdoor recreation such as hiking and snowshoeing.

Heritage areas are also used for preservation and restoration but for unique or unusual archeological, historical, and cultural features rather than natural ones. Within the Glen Tana area, this classification is recommended for property owned and managed by the Spokane Tribe of Indians due to its cultural properties and significance.

Finally, resource recreation areas provide opportunities for things like picnicking, walking trails, and cultural exhibits. Washington State Parks recommends this land use option for the specific area between North Dorset Road and West Rutter Parkway.

The open house will allow Washington State Parks to inform the community of these land use recommendations through comprehensive maps and posters to visualize the changes.

It will take place at The Hive - A Spokane Public Library on Tuesday, July 23 between 5 and 7 p.m.

Washington State Parks report they will make official decisions for the land use by late fall of 2024. The public can also participate in the planning process by submitting comments here
