COEUR D'ALENE, Idaho — For 3.1 miles, Chris Moore of Coeur d'Alene carried an American flag Sunday.

The Navy veteran didn't do it for himself.

"Some people didn't make it back," he said. "Brothers and sisters, this is their weekend, not my weekend.

Moore was joined by his daughter, Ella, and mother Debra in the 5K of the Coeur d'Alene Marathon that finished at McEuen Park on Memorial Day weekend.

"I’m so proud of him," Debra Moore said.

Craig Gulledge of Wichita Falls, Texas, who is in the Air Force, also carried the Stars and Stripes, this one through the full 26.2-mile marathon.

It was tough, he said, "but never as tough as what our fallen brothers went through. Carrying a flag is nothing compared to what they went through."

Gulledge completed the marathon in 3 hours, 47 minutes, and 13 seconds but said his run was about honoring those who died for their country.

"It’s not about me carrying the flag, it’s about them," he said.

Nearly 3,000 runners —  a record —  registered for either the marathon, half marathon, 10K, or 5K. With cool, cloudy skies, conditions were close to ideal for the races that offered views of Lake Coeur d'Alene from the North Idaho Centennial Trail.
