SPOKANE, Wash. — The City of Spokane announced that residents will have to have their garbage and recycling ready at their curb by 6 a.m. on their designated collection day.
According to the city, the new pick-up time (originally 7 a.m.) goes into effect on Tuesday, January 2, 2024. This schedule also applies to food and yard waste carts when services resume in March.
The city said this earlier start time allows for flexibility when routes need to begin earlier, as weather changes such as extreme heat and wildfire smoke impact employee safety throughout the year.
"The City’s Solid Waste Department employs approximately 120 people and some positions involve significant time outside of the vehicle to move dumpsters, pick up extra garbage, and perform equipment inspections," the city said in a statement.
Residents who don't get their carts out in time and miss their collection can request they be picked up for a return trip fee. MySpokane 311 is providing the following options for those requesting a "Missed Solid Waste Collection Service."
- Self-service online at MySpokane311
- Self-service through the MySpokane 311 mobile app available for iOS and Android
- Call 311 or (509) 755-2489 if outside City limits
