SPOKANE, Wash. — A new extension of the North Spokane Corridor opened Saturday with the ribbon cutting of the Children of the Sun Trail. According to WSDOT, the trail helps extend seven miles from the Hillyard neighborhood South to Cleveland Avenue in the Minniehaha neighborhood. Once completed, the trail will run alongside the North Spokane Corridor and connect to the Ben Burr and Centennial Trails.

Now open, the trail will continue to have work done in 2024, too.

"While most work is off the roadway, the construction of several pedestrian bridges will cause restrictions at various east/west roadways including Euclid and Wellesley Avenue. Pedestrian bridge crossings at these roadways will likely have impacts on the roadway once the footings begin construction and girders are set over the roadway," according to WSDOT's website.

The project began in May of 2021 and was set to be finished by fall 2023. WSDOT will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the opening of the trail sometime in the spring or summer of next year.
