Cougar killed after attacking child at Leavenworth's Enchantment Park

According to the Washington State Patrol, the cougar was euthanized after attempting to attack a child at Leavenworth's Enchantment Park.

LEAVENWORTH, Wash. — A child escaped without serious injuries after a cougar attack in Leavenworth's Enchantment Park on Saturday night.

Authorities say the cougar came out of the brush near a playground and knocked the boy over.

A local resident captured a photo of the cougar, which was tracked by Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife agents.

Authorities say the attack happened near dusk on Saturday. Agents managed to find the cougar at about 1:30 a.m. on Sunday and the animal was euthanized, according to state Patrol.

The cougar, a male, weighed about 125 pounds and was only 18-20 months old.

Tests on the euthanized cougar showed it was not unhealthy, WDFW said.

Cougar attacks are fairly rare in Washington state. There have only been two fatal attacks in Washington state since 1924.

Regardless, WDFW says the attack is a reminder for visitors to stay vigilant.
