Cat Tales Wildlife Center adapts to incoming heat wave

Staff watches over the animals closely as each season changes.

MEAD, Wash. — As we look at hotter temperatures in the Inland Northwest, it's not just humans dealing with the heat.

"Taking care of these animals is a labor of love," said Lisa Grey, the executive director for Cat Tales Wildlife Center.

Grey said while the weather is a factor, the animals they take care of are more than capable of handling the heat.

"They don't dislike it. You got animals who are native to jungle regions. That's hot and humid. This isn't humid, which is a plus," said Grey.

Grey said animals like Bengal Tigers, will spend a good amount of time in the shade throughout the day, before going to get a bite to eat. And sometimes, they can be fed by those who attend.

"Earlier in the morning, and closer to feeding time, the animals are going to be more active," said Grey.

Over the years, Grey said her and the team at the center have gotten better at adapting to the needs to each animal during the hotter months.

"One wall might be a better one wall or one seal in strip might be a better one for putting the shade tarps in to get the most shade out of the day for the animals."

Grey is encouraging those wanting to check out the center to do so, but to plan accordingly during the hotter days ahead.

"Dress for the weather. We have water for people coming in, because it does get hot outside," Grey said.

"Our job is to be their translator and explain why they're here, and about their species and why they should care," said Grey. "And sometimes if you view it as a small space, well, the other option they came here was euthanasia, so maybe a small space is a better option."
