SPOKANE, Wash. — The Carl Maxey Center hosted Black Joy Sunday, an event to help create positive identities for kids growing up black in Spokane.
Organizer April Eberhardt says Sunday's event provides a space to talk about Black History and culture in a predominately white area. Her goal is to help young kids of color know who they are.
"Spokane is a unique community," Eberhardt said. "I work in the schools, and I just want to be able to create a community space where they're learning things that are not maybe as often told, in the school system.."
The event was originally scheduled for the last Sunday of Black History Month but was postponed because of the weather. However, hosting the event in March showed just how the community recognizes black culture outside of February.
"Black history is an ongoing part of American history. So we don't need to do it just in February," Eberhardt said.
Eberhardt's goal is to make these events a part of a monthly routine.
"I feel strongly that it will just have a regular time on a regular day every month where students can come and focus on culture, heritage, understanding our history and celebrating who we are," Eberhardt said.
Eberhardt hopes to host the next event in April, and invite more of the community to be a part of it.
