IDAHO, USA — This Idaho legislative session, H0584, was introduced by Representative Joe Alfieri and Representative Jeff Ehlers.

H0584 asks for Idaho to be exempt from DST, and states:

The proposed legislation would eliminate the twice-yearly switch to Daylight Savings Time, and would take effect in coordination with at least two other neighboring states which are enacting similar legislation. Remaining on Standard Time would reduce numerous health and safety risks associated with changing clocks in spring and fall.

The bill has now moved to the senate.

Daylight saving time (DST) has been used in the U.S. since the passing of the Standard Time Act in 1918, following Europe's adoption of the concept to help conserve energy. DST has since become a debated topic, it was always unpopular with farmers but it was regulated federally with the Uniform Time Act of 1966.

In 1972, the Act was amended to allow states and territories with split time zones to opt out of DST, and in some states, the concept was not applicable. Arizona, Hawaii, American Samoa, Guam, The Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands do not participate in DST.

Lawmakers in other states have also introduced legislation to use DST permanently or end it permanently, none have been passed. Idaho is no exception and bills have been introduced over the years calling for the extension or end of DST.
