Bureau of Indian Affairs corrections officer indicted on federal sexual assault charges

NESPELEM, Wash. — A corrections officer with the Bureau of Indian Affairs has been federally indicted on sexual assault charges.

According to the US Attorney's Office of Eastern Washington, 34-year-old Darren Bowannie was charged with Deprivation of Rights Under Color of Law. Bowannie was transporting an individual from Wellpinit to Nespelem when he allegedly threatened and sexually assaulted the individual he was transporting.

The FBI is investigating the case.

If convicted, Bowannie faces up to life in prison and up to five years of supervised release.
