Bofer Canyon Fire burning near Kennewick destroys five homes

The Bofer Canyon Fire destroyed five homes and burned 5,000 acres as of Sunday afternoon. It is 50 percent contained.

KENNEWICK, Wash. — The Bofer Canyon Fire burning in Benton County near the city of Kennewick destroyed five homes and damaged four others as of Sunday afternoon.

The fire started Saturday around 3 p.m. on Interstate 82, north of Locust Grove Road. Hot and dry weather conditions combined with 15 mph winds pushed the fire to Canyon Lakes and Inspiration Estates neighborhoods within minutes and then east to Finley.

The fire grew to about 5,000 acres Sunday and state fire assistance was mobilized. Along with damages to the nine homes, five outbuildings were also destroyed by the fire.

Two people sustained minor injuries and used private transportation to seek treatment. Officials confirmed two horses were killed.

The fire was 50 percent contained as of Sunday afternoon and officials said they expect the fire to be 80 percent contained by Sunday evening. Crews are currently mopping up.

There are currently no evacuations or road closures in effect but officials encourage people to stay away from the wildfire area. Residents should also keep an eye out for hotspots in brush and grass near their homes and keep landscaping watered.

According to Washington State Patrol, the fire is burning grass and brush. Officials are still investigating the cause.
